Everyone knows that an escape room is the ultimate team building and family bonding activity. Being “locked” in a room with a group of people and being forced to work together makes everyone’s true colors come out. They are the utmost test of teamwork and with many different personalities thrown together anything can happen. It’s fun, it’s frantic, and it often reveals more about people than you’d expect. If you’ve ever done an escape room, you’ve probably met at least a few of these five classic escape room archetypes.

- The Natural Leader
Every group has one. This is the person that probably suggested going to an escape room in the first and the one that made the reservation. They will assign the tasks, keep all of the clues organized, and only have one goal in mind; WIN!
- The Overthinker
Did you find a clue that you are not sure where it goes yet? Give it to the overthinker of the group. Chances are they found where it goes some time ago. They over-analyzed everything in the room from the beginning, which will lead them to incredible “a-ha!” moments for them and their team. However, be cautious around these people, because that overworking brain could also lead you to unintentionally follow a red herring.
- The Clue Hoarder
This person finds a key, a note, or a weird magnet—and immediately pockets it “for later.” They’re not trying to sabotage the team; they just want to make sure nothing gets lost. Meanwhile, the group is tearing apart the room looking for the item that’s already in someone’s back pocket. The Clue Hoarder means well but will sometimes need to be reminded that escape rooms are collaborative, not a solo quest.
- The Silent Genius
This person is the underdog, the one that you least expect. This is the person that will solve something on their own without mentioning it to the rest of the group. They barely say a word, seem disengaged, and may even spend the first 20 minutes just observing. Then, just when the team is about to lose hope, they casually walk over and solve the most complex puzzle in seconds—without fanfare. Treat them well—they probably saw the answer before you even found the clue.
- The Wild Card
The unpredictable one. The one that can either be extremely helpful or extremely chaotic. They’re flipping furniture, unscrewing light bulbs, or trying to climb into the ceiling tiles. Sometimes they stumble on an important clue purely by accident. Sometimes they just distract the group with chaos. This person is going to keep things interesting the entire time. Appreciate your wild card. They will always keep things unique. And your game masters will appreciate them too.

Escape rooms are more than just games—they’re mini social experiments. The best teams balance each of these roles, whether naturally or by adapting in the moment. No matter what type you are, success comes from collaboration, respect, and a shared sense of adventure. And let’s be honest: win or lose, it’s all about the fun. So next time you’re in an escape room, take a look around—who’s leading, who’s solving, and who’s trying to unscrew a lightbulb for no reason?
